Every Rose has its Thorn...

...And every apartment has its issues.

Unfortunately for me, my cozy little nest I've rented, is not immune to this rule of thumb.

So, I've only called my landlord twice in the last eight months since I moved in {holy long-time Batman! I didn't realize how long it's been!} and I believe he is about due for another ring-a-ding-ding.  The first time I called was absolutely necessary.  I mean seriously, scary necessary.

My brand new oven broke. When I saw this apartment for the first time, it wasn't even there.  I'm not kidding... brand.new.and.broken. Broken in the sense that when I turned the oven off, it didn't turn off. Yes, that's right. The OVEN DIDN'T TURN OFF.  I had baked something or other one night and the morning after I was strolling through the kitchen and the little "ON" red light. I opened the oven and low and behold, it was warm.  Not hot, but definitely warm and on, as it had been all night.  I called him and he was in my apartment within 20 minutes fixing it. Thank GAHD!

The second time I called, I woke up and went to the little girls room.  When I lifted the toilet seat, the water was all brown and gross. I flushed and flushed and flushed and it wasn't going away!!  If the fresh water coming in is brown, that means I can't shower, brush my teeth, wash dishes... nothing.  Turns out the town was doing work on the pipes dredging up all kinds of grossness into the pipes. I flushed the toilet probably 15 more time until it was crystal clear, and ran all the faucets for like 20 minutes until I could tell they were also nice and clean and clear.  Crisis averted.

**And now for the issues at hand that need to be solved yet.**

First, a simple issue that I figured I'd throw in with the mix, since he'd be here already. One of my two kitchen bulbs is out.  The "vintage" lighting fixture is so high and I am so short, I can't reach it -even on a step stool.  *le sigh*  I guess that's why we have tall people in the world... and ladders.

Hello messy fridge!

Next stop, the bedroom. Now get your mind out of the gutter! It's all about my closet. Aside that I need to reorganize it, one door is broken.  I tried to fix it.  Even my brother tried to fix it over the holidays.  Our conclusion? I need a new door.  It's bent out of shape from overactive use. {Oh as if you don't try on 5 different outfits per day too... and 12 on the weekends.}  So now my closet permanently looks like this...

Pretty rough, right? It pains me every time I look at it.

And now the WORST part.... {WARNING! If you are squeamish with bugs DO NOT scroll down.}

 I have house centipedes.

I could have enlarged this image but I'm not going to because its just too gross.

I have killed probably 8 or 9 on the floor since I've lived here.  But the most epic, was when Matt and I were snuggled up on the couch about 15 minutes into watching a movie when Matt felt what he thought was his t-shirt tickling his arm.  When he reached and looked for it he found it was one of these centipedes!! As he yelled and slapped his arm, I leaped across the room screaming, even though I didn't know what was going on yet. The bug exploded somehow and the legs ended up stuck to the front of the couch cushion and the body was half under the couch three feet away.  After snapping a few shots of the bugger and using paint stirrers in a two-handed-chopstick fashion, we flushed him down the toilet with a single fingered goodbye.

So needless to say, this needs to be resolved. Like now yesterday.  Even though, I do know they are a spiders worst enemy.  I'm not a big fan of spiders but I am less of a fan of house centipedes. So he needs to come in for that first and foremost.

So there you have it, Nesters.  The big issues that need to be resolved in my home.  I hope you don't think I'm complaining.  I'm just telling you that my house, like yours is not perfect.  Like people its got flaws and foibles and they all have their own personalities.  What are those little things in your house that you need to resolve... like now yesterday.  Anyone else have problems with house centipedes or know how to fix a broken closet door? If you do, I'd love to hear it! So dish Nesters!

  1. If you figure out how to get rid of centipedes permanently, let me know! I use this stuff, which does help keep them away a bit: http://www.orangeguard.com/ and it's natural, so you can use it all over. Good luck!

  2. The thought of that creepy, crawly guy on Matt's arm has given me the complete heeby-jeebies. It's giving me phantom bug sensations. YUCK! I hope you get that all straightened out!

  4. And thanks for the tip Elyse!! I will definitely have to try that! Do you guys have the centipedes too? Or other creepy crawlers?

  5. We've had our share of centipedes too--usually J wakes up in the middle of the night to our cat Woods staring at something on the wall (the creepy bug)...so gross!

    We rent too and right now our dishwasher is somewhat broken--if we close the latch to the soap dispenser, it never opens and the dishes don't get cleaned. Until our landlord is able to fix it, we've been pouring the soap in about fifteen minutes into the cycle (when the soap is usually released) and this seems to be a good temporary fix :)

    Hope your issues get fixed soon!

  7. We have had a few centipedes in our house. I'm originally from an even colder Canadian city where those things cannot thrive, so they were a big shock to me. We've only had a couple venture out of the basement. I tried to kill one, but it was stronger than me. Another one took over the livingroom for three days and I missed some of my favorite shows. What a bugger. Hope youre problems are remedied soon!

  8. A couple of times lately, I've found the telltale signs of a mouse visiting my kitchen in the middle of the night. I'll take centipedes over mouse poop on the counter anyday. Ewwwww. Now the big dilemma: old fashioned trap that I'll have to empty...glue trap that will force me to throw away a screaming live mouse...or poison that will make him go into my walls to die and smell horrible? There's got to be a more humane, less disgusting way. Better yet, I'll come get rid of your centipedes if you get rid of my mouse.

  9. I'm so happy I'm not alone in my unwanted "tenants"!! Everyone's got their own little buggeres! {not that i would be wishing this on ANYONE!}

    KT- Thank goodness you have a cat to take care of the problem! ANd i had no idea you could even open a dishwasher mid-cycle!? If I tried that I'm sure gallons of water would come GUSHING out at me! Great solution!

    Chrissy- I know... seriously, if it was on me, i would never come home again. No. Seriously. I would move. (i just got a chill thinking about that)

    Tanya- Theyre FAST buggers arent they? I've never not won a match between me and my multi-legged friends but they definitely have out run me before. But I got them eventually. "I'll get you my pretty and you LITTLE DOG TOO!"

    Dana- OH NO! Mice are a WHOOOOLE different story! I have found a couple of "presents" on my desk at work recently and we have an exterminator come in regularly!! I wish I could give you advice on how to humanly remedy your little kitchen companion. Can you call your animal control for recommendations? I bet they would be able to help you. And I will TOTALLY take you up on the switcheroo! I would much rather a cutie little mouse (think Cinderella) than my mutant. BLECH! HAHAHHAA

    happy wednesday ladies!!

  12. We always have a can of wd40 to fix ridiculous closets and sliding glass doors in our rentals (yup! rentals. a new one every 6-12 months. ugh)

    Our worst household friends have been wolf spiders. GIANT wolf spiders... and silverfish... and one time a swarm of flies got into the house and didn't leave for weeks.

    I feel your pain girl! I'm so following you! With our crazy rentals, we so have to stick together! I'm glad I stumbled across your blog!

  13. Hey Jenn! I'm so happy you stumbled across my blog too! I always love to have new Nesters! I've never even HEARD of wolf spiders!!! But in my imagination they are HORRIFYING! EEK! AND YES! I actually thought these things I have were silverfish at first but Matt did some googling and corrected me. hahaha. I stopped by P&C and love your blog too! <3

  14. Blech! Centipedes and silverfish are my worst nightmare! When I was in gymnastics one of the girl had a giant (I mean giant, like the size of a salamander) millipede as a pet. A freakin' pet! Disgusting.

  15. A PET!? WHO ON EARTH WOULD DO THAT!? That made me gag. BLECH! hahaha but thanks for stopping by!! <3

  16. We rent a too, and I swear, there's always something that's wrong and has to be fixed. But I agree that bugs are the worst. We have an ant problem, but I have to agree that centipedes might be the worst!
