Cinderella and Prince Charming

via
Most of you who read this blog know that I work in the bridal gown industry.  It was no mistake.  My senior collection in fashion school was a bridal collection.  I was lucky enough to grow up in the city that hosts one of the most famous bridal gown companies in the country.   My life is surrounded by weddings.  I love weddings.  No I mean I really love weddings.  {Poor Matt}  All the more reason that Friday's Royal Wedding of William and Kate was epic.
Growing up, I will admit that, I had a few pics of Prince William {Wills} up on my walls.  I fantasized about marrying Wills and becoming a Princess.  {Princess Gina... has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?}  I felt closer to the throne than any old US citizen, since my parents lived in England for about 10 years and my brother was born there. I was basically a citizen myself! {Not at all. Not even close. Nice rationalizing, Gina...}   and why couldn't a commoner marry a Prince?  Love conquers all, right?

I guess in the end, an optimistic 10 year old was right, love does conquer all... even the Royal Rules.  Commoner Kate Middleton married the Prince of Wales on Friday April 29th.  It was every girls dream come true.  I was up at 4 am on Friday, watching the whole shebang.  I had my cup of tea in hand, in my PJ's on the couch.  The coverage was so wonderful! I felt like I was watching a home video of my friends wedding.  Maybe it's because I love weddings so much but it gave me the same feeling that I get on Christmas... You know, that rising warm, fuzzy feeling in my belly.  I thought the music was absolutely spectacular and made the event what it was.

That soft spot I have for weddings? I have the same kind but 100 times bigger for choirs of all kinds. They always give me goosebumps.  The fact they sang the same song as was played at Diana's wake was so heartfelt.  Then the anthem that was written specially for the wedding was breathtaking.  *swoon*

And then there was the dress.  Oh the dress!  May I toot my own horn for one second and tell you that I called it.  I was asked by a fellow upholstery student what I thought her dress would look like and my response was, "I think it will have a deep V, lace bodice with long sleeves and an A line skirt without a huge train."  If I do say so myself... I was dead on.  It wasn't too hard to figure out though.  I pretty much just took what she wears all the time and turned it into a bridal gown.  Everyone is comparing her gown to Grace Kelly's.  While I think it's a valid comparison and it does have similarities the first thing I thought of was Cinderella and Prince Charming...

See what I mean?  Friday was honestly a real fairytale coming true, as well as a historical moment that I am happy I woke up to witness. Even if it only was on TV.  Now I just cant wait to see pictures of the reception!

So what did you think of the royal wedding? Did you even watch? Did you want to be a princess? Or would you rather stay away from the limelight and scrutiny? Spill it! We're all waiting to hear what you have to say!

  1. So I've been following your blog for quite a while now and didn't know you worked in the bridal gown industry! Guess you learn something new every day :)

I thought the wedding was perfect and you could tell they both worked very hard to keep the day special (and intimate which is hard to do with the whole world watching). Amid the hubbub, they never lost sight of what's really important: their marriage and the joining and sharing of two lives together!

  2. As a child, I spent countless hours drawing Cinderella's dress (or my own designs), and I designed my first wedding gown, which my grandmother and her sister (a professional seamstress) made. The second time around, I had a hippie wedding in bellbottoms, sandals and an embroidered gauze shirt. People invariably prefer hearing about that one...LOL As unsentimental as I sound, I did think Kate's dress was breathtaking.

  3. I really LOVED getting up and watching all the fanfare, but I am even *less* interested in having a wedding ceremony after watching (I mean that in the most joyous way possible!)

  4. Haha you guys are all so funny! I think the design of her dress was nothing ground breaking but the fit on it and the craftsmanship that it takes to get a dress to fit THAT perfectly... I can only use the words mind blowing. Whatever alterations team did that can fix anything!!
